AFC Telford's Sean Williams rejects move to Welsh Premier League side TNS

The New Saints have missed out in a bid to land AFC Telford United midfielder Sean Williams.

TNS made a seven-day approach for the 24-year-old, signed by the Bucks from Hednesford in the summer. But the Scouser has decided to stay put.

That was a disappointment for the Saints, but delighted Telford boss Rob Smith who has lost two midfielders since the start of the season in Lee Fowler and Michael Monaghan.

"TNS came in for Sean with a seven-day approach but he decided to turn them down," said Smith.

"That's been the good news we've had this week. It's important because he's been playing well – which is probably why they came in for him, but he's enjoying his football here.

"With his coaching commitments as well, he's decided to stay put."

Smith meanwhile has drawn a blank on his attempts to sign a striker in time for tomorrow's visit of FC Halifax.

The Bucks are without knee casualty Dave Hibbert but Smith had already been seeking reinforcements up front.

"We've been actively looking but without any success in terms of what we want – nothing really fits the bill," said the boss.

Telford have been blocked from trying to re-sign Connor McCarthy, who was their eight-goal top scorer on loan from Southport last season.

"Connor's back in their team now so Southport aren't prepared to do anything with him," said Smith.

Centre-back Dan Preston is very doubtful after a bout of food poisoning, so Ben Bailey is set to continue alongside captain Luca Havern at the heart of the defence.

Tomorrow's opponents Halifax are 10th after two defeats but Smith expects them to be competing for the National North title.

"They've got the management team (Billy Heath and Mark Carroll) who got North Ferriby promoted and who we know very well from our battles with Hednesford and Telford," said Smith.

"They're now at a bigger club and have taken the best players from North Ferriby to Halifax."

and they've got a guaranteed 20-goal a season striker in Tom Denton so they have to be right up there with the favourites to win the league.
