Larry Chambers delighted with Telford resilience

Larry Chambers hailed AFC Telford United's superb rearguard action after they returned to winning ways by beating high-flying Kidderminster Harriers 1-0.

Micah Evans's 25th-minute strike proved to be the difference between the teams for only Telford's second win in nine.

But only a superb fierce rearguard action from the Bucks, superbly led by captain Luca Havern and the defence kept Harriers at bay.

Keeper James Montgomery made a couple of fine saves but he was brilliantly protected by those in front of him, while the visitors had an effort disallowed for offside.

And assistant boss Chambers saluted his back five for keeping Harriers at bay.

"Our back four or five with Monty (James Montgomery) have been very good in recent weeks and we deserved a clean sheet," said Chambers.

"All the reports we had were that Kidder were a very expansive side who like to push the full backs on with very good players and they love to overload you.

"We had a gameplan and at times we had to relinquish a lot of possession but we stuck to our task, defended well and at times when we did break, we were a bit more wasteful than we should have been.

"I don't think they opened us up as much as the possession they had - we kept them at bay generally because of our shape.

"We got our wide players doing jobs on their full backs and I think when we did break, we broke well.

"We got the goal and had that little bit of luck we deserved and managed to keep it tight until half-time which we haven't been doing in recent weeks.

"Then at half-time we got together and we deserved it in terms of our workrate and our shape.

"Kiddy might say they had chances at the end but a lot of the play was in front of us and we coped quite well."

Jonathan Royle made his debut after signing on a three-month loan from Southport earlier in the day and made a telling difference in midfield winning headers and tackles.

And Chambers indicated they needed the 21-year-old's added industry in the continued absence of the injured Jack Rea.

"We've got a lot of technicians in the middle of the park with 'Willo' (Sean Williams) and Callum Gittings but when Jack Rea doesn't play, we need a bit more steel, determination and physicality," said the Bucks No 2.

"Jon gives us that because in the second half when they had their best spell, he won his headers and got his tackles in.

"We brought him in for that reason and I think he had a decent debut."

"There were times when we got forward and we could have made more of those opportunities.

"In the second half we had two or three opportunities when we could have made it 2-0 and we could have seen the game out a bit more comfortably.

"But we're happy with the three points - we're not going to get greedy at the moment!"

Telford again struggled to create clear-cut chances and Chambers admitted their striker search was proving frustrating.

"We're on the lookout for strikers every day of the week but what we're not going to do is bring a striker in on good money who we don't think is better than what we've got," he insisted.

"At the moment, the players being offered to us we can't be sure they're going to improve us."
