Rob Smith: Telford showed FA Cup commitment

The Bucks boss was stinging in his criticism after back-to-back league defeats against Gainsborough Trinity and Gloucester City but was far happier after a solid, if unspectacular performance in the second qualifying round.

Telford will now host Worcester in a replay on Tuesday night.

Smith said: "We asked for two things today - be hard to beat and show some commitment which we have not shown over the last two games.

"I think we showed both of those things. On top of that we asked to be in the hat on Monday and that is what we are. I can't have any complaints. I thought it was a fair result and a proper, old-fashioned, FA Cup scrap really.

"We have played a back three for the first time this season and had barely any chance to work on it. We still have to work on the other end of the pitch. The main thing is we have come here and put on a solid performance against a good side."

Worcester, who had won their previous three games, made most of the running in the first half and Bucks keeper James Montgomery was twice called on to deny former Albion striker Lee Hughes.

Telford improved in the second period, with new signing Connor McCarthy having their best chance, though the hosts almost snatched victory at the end when Montgomery kept out a Colby Bishop effort.

McCarthy, who spent two spells on loan with the Bucks last season, has joined on a permanent deal from Southport.

Smith said: "We have signed him on a contract until the end of the year with an option for a further one in our favour.

"That is great news for us. I have been working on this deal from the start of the season. He made a massive difference for us. The ball stuck and we had a bit of threat up front for the first time this season really."
