Goalkeeper James Montgomery reckons AFC Telford's dogged FA Cup performance at Worcester City was a step in the right direction.

Saturday's 0-0 draw means the sides will meet again tomorrow night in a second qualifying round replay at the New Bucks Head but was also important in the wider context of the club's campaign, as Rob Smith's side rebounded after back-to-back defeats.

Montgomery, who made a number of key saves to keep his team in the Cup, felt they rediscovered some of the resilience which went missing in losses at Gainsborough and Gloucester.

He said: "It was definitely a better performance compared to the last two.

"If you look at our performances before then, we were very resilient. We had lost a couple but we were hard to beat and we came out of every game thinking we could have won it.

"The last two games we came out thinking we didn't really do enough. It is all about being resilient and if we can take this into the league it is a step in the right direction."

"We said as a group we needed to fight together. I think you saw the togetherness on Saturday. All the boys were fighting for one another and it makes a massive difference, being resilient and hard to beat."

Montgomery twice denied former Albion striker Lee Hughes during the opening half and then made a crucial save at the death from Colm Bishop as the hosts enjoyed the better of the chances.

"I am pleased with the save and pleased we are still in the competition," he said. "We have a tough game now on Tuesday. We have to prepare right for that and hopefully we get the win."
