Rob Smith is keen for better local links at Telford

Boss Rob Smith is hoping AFC Telford can build closer ties with local clubs after the loan signing of Walsall's Jordan Sangha.

The 18-year-old checked into New Bucks Head on Thursday after sealing a one-month loan deal from Jon Whitney's side.

But rather than scouring the upper echelons of non-league for a high-budget centre-forward, Smith admitted more financially viable moves such as Sangha's may have to suffice.

A number of the Bucks' National League North rivals reportedly operate on a supreme budget and a proportion of the clubs in the division are full-time outfits. Building relationships with the region's Football League clubs is a move that the Telford chief is keen on.

"We're simply not in the market to go out and target a £500 or £600 per week player," admitted Smith.

"We hope to build relationships with clubs around us, that's something we're really looking at.

"It's the sort of area we'll be looking at to improve the squad.

"We are searching for answers and nobody can accuse us of not trying. We're always on the lookout."

Today's visitors Chorley are sitting fifth in the division and currently mix it with some of the bigger budgets in the league.

Leaders AFC Fylde are reportedly very well-backed and became a full-time club during the summer.

Harrogate Town, Kidderminster Harriers and Darlington 1883 complete the top five. Class of 92-backed Salford City and FC Halifax Town, who boast the following of former Football League side Halifax Town are also challenging.

The boss will be keen to bolster his attacking options as the Bucks remain the joint-lowest scoring side in the division, alongside Stalybridge Celtic with eight.

Last season's wonder Josh Wilson has been struggling with a hamstring problem.

But fans' favourite Connor McCarthy returned last week before the FA Cup tie against Worcester City.

"Connor was a massive lift, he's a perfect fit, we need to get him settled and scoring," said the boss.

"He just wants to play, whether it's Premier League or Sunday League."

Meanwhile, Telford's commercial manager Lee Griffiths has left the club after less than two months in the role.

Shropshire-based Griffiths had been commercial and events sales manager at Northants County Cricket Club.

No reason has been given for his departure, although the Bucks are looking for a replacement.
