Ben Bailey relishing physical game for AFC Telford in league clash

Defender Ben Bailey is braced for a physical battle against Boston United tomorrow – and wouldn't have it any other way.

The 14th-placed Bucks host the side sitting three places below them looking to bounce back from last weekend's defeat to Salford City, writes Steve Box.

Dennis Greene's side are boosted by the return from suspension of target man Gregg Smith, who has five goals to his name since joining in the summer.

But Bailey, who returned to training last night after picking up an ankle injury last weekend, insists he will relish the battle.

"You know Boston are going to be a big, physical side," said the former Hednesford centre-half.

"I know they have had a few changes with a couple of players moving on but they are a good team.

"You know the game is going to be physical up against a big striker but that's the sort of challenge I like, I'd much rather have that than a nippy striker to chase after.

"It will be tough but if we can play how we can then I think we will have too much for them."

With the heart of defence one of AFC Telford's strongest positions, boss Rob Smith has opted to play with three centre-halves in recent weeks.

Bailey, captain Luca Havern and Paul McCone have formed a good partnership and Bailey admits changing formation has not been a big concern.

"It's something I have done before under Ron and Larry at Hednesford," he added.

"We are all comfortable playing that system and all vocal in organising ourselves. We are confident that we can keep clean sheets and help us push up the league."

Matters off the field may have dominated the headlines with the Bucks launching a fundraising campaign that raised £25,000 by the end of October, with a similar figure needed this month.

Big attendances at the last two home matches (against FC United and Salford) have boosted that drive and Bailey says playing in front of a big crowd gives extra motivation.

He said: "The turnout from the fans has helped the club off the pitch and it is a big boost to know the supporters are there backing you.

"They are the 12th man and it gives you that extra bit of energy when you might be tiring at the end of the match.

"I love it here and hopefully we can win tomorrow and get another run going to push up the table."
