AFC Telford need to kick 'nearly men' status, claims Dwayne Samuels

AFC Telford United full-back Dwayne Samuels has called for the Bucks to stop being the 'nearly men' after back to back National League North defeats.

Rob Smith's side fell to a heartbreaking 2-1 reversal against Boston United on Saturday – conceding a 90th-minute goal – after losing to Salford City the week before.

Popular right-sided defender Samuels returned from a spell on the bench for the visit of the Pilgrims due to James Hurst's suspension. The 26-year-old, who won both the fans' and vice-president's Player of the Season awards last season, was frustrated at the Bucks' inability to take chances after a strong start.

"Performances have been OK. Don't get me wrong, they could have been better – and some have been very poor," said Samuels.

"It's just been that moment in front of goal. It's not just strikers. I got into a good scoring position on Saturday and should've worked the goalkeeper more.

"Rob was really disappointed. He could not have done any more. We started well, attacked and got the wing-backs wide. The only thing missing was a goal. There have been moments like the Tamworth game (late defeat) and Worcester in the FA Cup. We're the nearly men. Nearly getting a result or nearly getting a win."

Samuels spent the matches against FC United of Manchester and Salford City on the bench. His replacement Hurst – who has since been suspended due to social media comments – was sent off in the Salford game.

Former West Brom academy man Samuels admitted his period of absence was 'weird' but was determined to make an impact on his return.

"It was due to form," he added. "The manager explained his reasons and I accepted them."

Meanwhile, Smith expects to complete the signing of 19-year-old midfielder Joe Fitzpatrick, released by Worcester City, in time for the match there on Saturday.

And keeper James Montgomery has been called up to the England C squad for their clash in Tallinn against Estonia Under-23s next Tuesday.
