Jamie Vardy call leaves AFC Telford goalkeeper James Montgomery dreaming

It has been some few weeks for Bucks shot-stopper James Montgomery.

One week the 22-year-old receives a first England C call-up, experiencing the life of a semi-professional international footballer.

The next, he is posing with Premier League winner and Champions League star Jamie Vardy after being named as one of the first to be signed up for the striker's V9 academy.

Perhaps it's not a surprise. Montgomery is no 'ordinary' semi-pro goalkeeper. He has the game in his genes and blood thanks to Sunderland legend Jim.

Monty, as he is affectionately known, also trains twice a week with Sunderland's under-21 set-up. While Telford chief Rob Smith has regularly said it is 'when, not if' Montgomery earns a professional deal.

And the glovesman has taken another huge stride in linking up with the newly-formed V9 Academy.

Established by the Leicester City star, a former champion of the non-league game, the academy set-up – which will be based at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium – begins next May and aims to help 42 semi-pro applicants into full-time football.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, due to his humble background, Vardy made quite the impression on Telford's No.1.

"He's quite the inspirational person," said the former Middlesbrough youngster.

"It was inspiring to meet him. I've never played against him, when he was in non-league I was probably still in school.

Everyone wants to be the next Jamie Vardy. No matter what position you play in – we all want his story. It helps us with our dream that we'll make it."

Montgomery, in his relaxed manner, shrugged off the glitz of meeting last season's Premier League Player of the Year.

"He was sound. Totally down to earth," said Montgomery.

Montgomery, alongside Tamworth's Danny Newton and Eastleigh's Luke Coulson, became the first players to join the V9 Academy.

But the Bucks man, who first received his call after Telford's 1-1 draw at Bradford Park Avenue in October, is keen to remain grounded.

Next up is a trip to Ramsbottom in the FA Trophy.

"I'm enjoying Telford. I can forget about it for months now and focus on tomorrow and the season," he said.

"I've had a real confidence boost but I'm not letting things go to my head.

"We have a cup game tomorrow and I've always got to think about the biggest game, which is the next one."
