Joe Fitzpatrick eyeing more AFC Telford goals

Joe Fitzpatrick has set his sights on scoring more regularly after opening his AFC Telford United account in spectacular fashion.

The 19-year-old midfielder blasted a shot into the top corner from long range in the Bucks' 1-1 draw at FC Halifax Town on Saturday.

Fitzpatrick came on for the injured Jonathan Royle just prior to the hour mark, also impressing with his passing and work off-the-ball.

Reacting to his first Telford goal, Fitzpatrick said: "It felt nice as soon as it came off my foot. I anticipated the second ball and as soon as I hit it, it felt nice. I haven't scored many goals recently but it is a thing I need to add to my game. That is hopefully the start of it."

Fitzpatrick signed for Telford from National League North rivals Worcester City in November.

He has also spent time in Mansfield Town's youth set-up and made an impression on boss Rob Smith and assistant Larry Chambers on trial in pre-season.

Since arriving at the New Bucks Head, he has made four appearances – all from the bench.

Fitzpatrick is determined to make the most of the opportunities that come his way and said: "Obviously, no one likes sitting on the bench but as soon as you get your chance, you have to take it.

"Hopefully when I do get my chance, like I did on Saturday, I will take it. I am very grateful to Rob and Larry, offering me a chance to get regular minutes at this level."

Fitzpatrick has joined five of the current squad on one league goal so far this term – Ben Bailey, Luca Havern, Dave Hibbert, Danny Reynolds and Royle. Josh Wilson is the top scorer with four goals.

At The Shay, the Bucks conceded a stoppage-time Josh Wilde equaliser after Fitzpatrick put them ahead in the 82nd minute.

On the result, Fitzpatrick added: "I was very disappointed because I think we dug deep and we did well.

"We stopped them from doing what they are good at and we were all disappointed to concede a last-minute goal."
