AFC Telford braced for James Montgomery bids

AFC Telford are bracing themselves for offers for star goalkeeper James Montgomery.

The Bucks shot-stopper has enjoyed an excellent season despite his side's struggles in National League North.

And it is understood several Football League clubs – including some in the Championship – have been keeping tabs.

Bids are expected to arrive for the keeper within the next few days and it's highly unlikely the club will stand in the way of him progressing his career.

Montgomery, who trains with Premier League Sunderland during the early part of each week, has been among Telford's standout performers and earlier this season received a call-up to the England C squad.

He was originally on standby but was later drafted in and was on the bench for the match against Estonia Under-23s in Tallinn.

And the glovesman also took another huge stride in linking up with the newly-formed V9 Academy.

Established by Leicester City star Jamie Vardy, a former champion of the non-league game, the academy set-up – which will be based at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium – begins in May and aims to help 42 semi-pro applicants into full-time football.

Montgomery joined the Bucks on non-contract terms in March 2015 from the Nike Academy before signing a one-year deal for 2015/16 and then being retained again last summer.

In the meantime, Telford must focus on tomorrow's crucial league game at home to a Curzon Ashton side who are two points and three places better off.

Central defensive duo Ben Bailey and Luca Havern are suspended for Rob Smith's side.

And the club are appealing for volunteers to help make sure the game goes ahead.

To protect the pitch from the forecast overnight frost tonight, the club will be putting covers on.

But they are appealing for anyone who is free to help remove the covers to meet in the Learning Centre at 10am.

A hot drink and bacon sandwich will be provided to all volunteers.
