Telford hoping to extend Elliot Hodge loan

Boss Rob Smith is hoping AFC Telford United can see off National League interest and extend Elliot Hodge's loan deal.

The 21-year-old winger's temporary switch from Lincoln City – who also play in the National League – comes to an end today.

But Smith is hoping the flying winger, who has been an instrumental member of the Bucks' first XI recently, will agree to remain at the New Bucks Head.

The Telford chief is confident that Hodge – son of former England, Nottingham Forest and Villa man Steve – is happy to extend his stay.

"Elliot's loan is up today and he's been excellent for us," said Smith. "We're hoping to do something and I'd like to think it will be extended.

"He's really enjoying it and he wants to stay, so hopefully we can come to some agreement.

"There is a bit more interest in him with clubs that have more clout.

"National League clubs are looking but it's in our favour. Elliot's told Danny Cowley (Lincoln manager) that he wants to stay, and Danny's been excellent with us so far.

"It's whether we can agree financially, which is more difficult for us."

The deal is Hodge's second loan stint of the season, after he excelled in the division below with Stafford Rangers.

He has featured on five occasions for the Bucks, including last Saturday's 3-1 victory over Curzon Ashton.

Smith is pleased to have wide players at his disposal, and offered a word of advise to the on-loan Lincoln man on how he can take his game forward.

"It was nice to start with two wingers," Smith added. "It gave us nice balance and I thought Elliot was excellent. His work rate is sensational. The one thing with him is his end product. He'll beat a man but his cross is not good enough.

"It's the only thing he's lacking. He's a real honest boy, a smashing lad with great attitude and commitment.

"But supporters want to read his name in the headlines for making assists or scoring goals. It's that final bit."
