Rob Smith hoping for AFC Telford spark against Stalybridge Celtic

AFC Telford United boss Rob Smith is hoping the trip to Stalybridge Celtic will spark his charges into life as it did last season.

The Bucks appeared destined for the drop in National League North when they visited Bower Fold last February, but a 5-5 thrilling draw proved to be the turning point as they followed it up with five victories. Smith insists his 17th-placed side cannot afford to lose tomorrow and, due to third-bottom Bradford Park Avenue not playing this weekend, a victory would see them move eight points clear of the drop zone.

Recalling last year's trip to Stalybridge and highlighting the importance of tomorrow's clash, Smith said: "I think that was the game that sparked us into getting the wins we needed. The one main thing is that it was a horrible game to be involved in as we were awful on the day.

"I remember the supporters singing some not-so complimentary songs about me and the team on the day but we managed to get a point.

"It felt like two points dropped on the day but, looking back, that's what got us on a run. Let's hope this game can be the catalyst for us to go on another run. Bradford are not playing this weekend so it's a chance for us to an open up an eight-point gap between us and the bottom three.

"It is a massive opportunity as eight points is a huge gap, even at this stage of the season. It is a must-not-lose game."

Hosts Stalybridge, who had former Bucks chief Liam Watson step down from his role as manager back in August, are second from bottom having picked up just 14 points.

Smith insists they are no pushovers though and said: "They have really picked up in recent weeks. They beat Halifax in their last game at home so that tells you all you need to know.

"They have got some good players so it is not going to be easy for us. We will have to be at our best.

"But if we go there with the same sort of commitment we have shown over recent weeks, I will be surprised if we don't come away with anything."

Defender Ben Bailey is back from suspension for the game while Dave Hibbert is likely to be involved after a quad injury.

"Ben has been good for us all season so we are happy to have him back in the fold and we've probably got Dave Hibbert back as well which is a big boost," added Smith.
