Luca Havern intent on retaining solidity at AFC Telford

Skipper Luca Havern is determined for AFC Telford United to remain solid at the back after the departure of star shot-stopper James Montgomery.

The 22-year-old keeper has left to join National League side Gateshead, and the Bucks are expected to bring in a replacement on loan from a Football League club imminently.

Telford have kept 10 clean sheets across all competitions so far this term, and Havern said: "The amount of clean sheets we have had this season show you how good Monty is. (Boss) Rob (Smith) and (assistant) Larry (Chambers) will have been working hard and will have a player in mind of good quality to come in.

"It's up to us at the back to keep that solid line we have had all season, continue the good work and keep trying to push forward."

As well as praising Montgomery's top-drawer showings on the pitch, Havern praised the Mackem's efforts off it.

"Obviously we are all gutted to see him go as he has been one of the key performers for us this season," he said. "As a central defender, you feel so comfortable knowing he is behind you in goal and he is a really nice, genuine lad as well."

"I believe Gateshead is just a stepping stone for him, the next step for getting into the Football League.

"I think people forget that he is only 22. Throughout the whole month there has been rumours on him moving so it is says a lot about his professionalism that he stuck at it during January for us and put in some of the best performances I have seen from him.

"On behalf of all the lads at Telford, we wish him all the best for the future."

Havern was involved as Telford won 4-2 against Market Drayton Town last night.

The friendly at Lilleshall was put in place by chief Smith to ensure his players stayed sharp – after the scheduled trip to Stalybridge Celtic this past weekend was called off due to a waterlogged pitch – and to have a look at a potential new keeper.

"With the game being off last Saturday, it is what you want as a player – to be playing," added Havern.

"As much as we need training and organised sessions, there is nothing like an actual match to work on our shape and be prepared for the Gloucester game this weekend."
