Larry Chambers wants more of the same from AFC Telford
Larry Chambers is pleased to have seen the AFC Telford United players ‘put a shift in’ but insists that is the minimum he expects from them.
The Bucks, following a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Brackley Town last Tuesday, lost 2-1 at Chorley on Saturday.
It was a much better showing but two lapses in concentration after set-pieces proved to be costly as Telford now find themselves four points above the National League North relegation zone.
Assistant boss Chambers said: “What the players did on Saturday is the basics, what they should be doing week in, week out.
“That’s what we should be getting as a minimum, with a bit more quality.
“They have been battered and bruised – don’t get me wrong – by the papers, the radio, myself and (boss) Rob (Smith).
“They have had a bit of a beating and they turned up on Saturday and put a shift in. The fact it was not good enough is a different story but everybody has tried.”
Telford defended from the front as the attacking trio of Dave Hibbert, Josh Wilson and Zak Lilly got through a lot of work.
A good number of Bucks supporters made their way to Victory Park too and Chambers said: “Dave Hibbert had a difficult task being up front on his own but I think occupied the defenders and won his fair share of headers.
“I thought Zak Lilly – for his first start this year – worked hard for as long as he could. The defence were maybe overworked at times. Everybody gave it a go.
“The fans have been here from day one. From mine and Rob’s first spell here, when we had a lot of success, to when it hasn’t been great, the fans have got behind the players.
“Win, lose or draw, if you put a shift in and a good performance – the fans will be behind you.”
Chambers is hoping to have Lee Hughes (groin) and Luke Higham (ankle) fit for the upcoming home game against Bradford Park Avenue and added: “We miss Lee because those half-chances that fell on Saturday, with Hughesy there they would have ended up in the back of the net.
“Also, we miss Luke Higham. He has been a very steady player for us and he’s one of those that you don’t realise how much you miss them until he’s not there. By playing Luke, it gives us the chance to push Joel Dielna further up the field. Hopefully, they’ll both be available for Bradford.”
