Ash Rawlins vows to make most of AFC Telford chance
Ash Rawlins is delighted to have been handed an opportunity at AFC Telford United, adding: “Hopefully I can prove my worth.”
The 21-year-old goalkeeper joined the Bucks yesterday after Callum Burton was recalled by Shrewsbury Town – half of a double blow for the club as forward John Marsden was recalled by Stockport County.
Rawlins has been playing for Market Drayton Town in the Evo-Stik First Division South – two tiers below Telford – and was previously registered at National League side Barrow.
The Bucks signed him, despite the registration deadline being last month, after being granted special permission from league officials and he was due to be between the sticks at Darlington today.
“I got a couple of phone calls after Callum was recalled by Shrewsbury and I was delighted,” said Rawlins.
“Hopefully I can prove my worth, come in and do a job.
“I have had a few trials at Telford over the last year or so, so I know the players quite well and know the management team.”
Rawlins – who was a student at Telford College of Art and Technology – had a trial at Leicester City a couple of years ago and also spent time training with Kidderminster Harriers. Former Wolves keeper Matt Murray has spoke of his great potential in the past, and now Rawlins wants to really kick on.
“It is a big step up from Market Drayton, but I think I’m ready to make that step,” he added.
“It didn’t quite work out at Barrow so I have just been waiting for an opportunity. I’m looking to impress and hopefully be able to secure something for next season.”
