Rob Smith: We will rebuild for AFC Telford fans
Boss Rob Smith is determined to rebuild AFC Telford United's squad over the summer and give disillusioned supporters an 'exciting team' to watch.
The Bucks, having finally secured National League North survival this past weekend, close out a dismal season against Harrogate Town at home on Saturday.
Over the course of this campaign, attendances at the New Bucks Head have dwindled – with crowds tending not to exceed 1,200.
Smith is eager to get absent fans back through the gates next term and said: "It was really, really important we kept our status in this division – more than anything.
"Financially, and with the crowds, it is really important. That was the big thing. I know it has not been great but we can start to rebuild.
"I don't think we are going to have massive investment but whatever we get, we'll try to get an exciting team."
Telford's record this season stands at 10 wins, 11 draws and 20 losses. Having conceded 57 goals, they have the best defence in the bottom half of the table.
They have only scored 38 goals in 41 games though, putting their attack level with rock-bottom Altrincham and only better than second-bottom Stalybridge Celtic.
On when the current crop of players will find out if they are staying or going, Smith said: "In terms of talking to players, we will sit down with the current squad as soon as the season ends.
"I won't keep players hanging on one way or another. Then, new players – we have been working on that for weeks."
One man who has been given a big chance to impress is former Market Drayton Town keeper Ash Rawlins.
The 21-year-old from Arleston made his Bucks bow at Darlington on Saturday, having been signed with special permission from the league.
Rawlins has had trials with before the Bucks – who are looking for a permanent no.1 for next season.
"He has come in and done well. Darlington is a difficult place to go for your debut, and they lumped the ball in there," Smith added.
"Apart from a few miscued kicks, I did not see him making any mistakes so he's done himself no harm at all.
"Sometimes football is strange, it throws up things – take your chance. Fair play to the boy."
