The Bucks have signed 15 players so far for the new National North campaign as they look to go much better after back-to-back relegation fights.

Hall of Fame member Palmer, who played more than 260 games in two spells for both the old Telford United and the current club, regularly speaks to boss Rob Smith and assistant boss Larry Chambers.

Smith has spoke previously of bringing in players who are technically sound and mentally strong.

Meetings with new players were carried out with the latter quality very much looked for, and Palmer said: “The players all seem keen, but it’s hard to really judge their character until you’ve worked with them for a while.

“Graham Hutchison has come in, and they’ll look at him to be a leader while Ben Bailey has stayed.

“Of course, the captain’s armband is up for grabs but it’s not just about the captain, you need the experienced players to be vocal so the young players can then follow suit.”

He added: “Telford are a massive club. Players should be relishing the opportunity to play at the New Bucks Head.

“In my day, we all realised it was a great opportunity and gave it our all. If you are going out and giving your all, the fans will be happy.”

“You can’t win every week, but seeing that effort is the main thing as there has been times over the last couple of years when players have not been giving 100 per cent.”

On the club’s summer recruitment, he said: “I speak to Rob and Larry quite often just to see how they are getting on.

“As much as it’s been good business for Telford, you look around the division and everyone is bringing in good players.

“I think Rob and Larry will be pleased with who they have brought in and bringing in the goalkeeper, Jaz Singh, has pleased a lot of fans.

“It’s the other end of the pitch now – games are won and lost with goals, and Rob and Larry know that.

“They’ll be looking for a proven scorer, but also for the likes of Dan Westwood and Zak Lilly to really stake a claim.”
