He takes over from Sharon Bowyer, who also served as general manager and announced her intention to step down in May after more than a decade of service at the club.

She has been working on a part-time basis since then and officially steps down on July 20.

Murphy moves to the New Bucks Head following the best part of a decade at Worcester City, where he served as secretary and as a director.

He had previously been a secretary and director at Solihull Moors and Solihull Borough FC as well as being a director of the National League from 2014 until last season.

Murphy takes up the role with immediate effect and Telford say he will ‘oversee all first team football-related activity within the club’.

“I am looking forward to it. I know the division well from my time at Worcester City,” he said.

“I have been in the game long enough and have good experience in the role.

“I was at Worcester for eight years (from 2009 until this year). I thought it was time for a fresh challenge, and this is a great opportunity. I am just looking forward to getting started.”

Murphy is expected to work closely with boss Rob Smith and assistant boss Larry Chambers, and he added: “I am delighted to be joining AFC Telford United, and I look forward to working with the management team and club officials.

“I trust my experience in the game will be of benefit to my new club.”

Telford director Andy Pryce pointed towards Murphy’s experience and said: “I am delighted to welcome Joe to the club.

“He brings a wealth of National League experience with him and I look forward to working with him for the forthcoming season.”

Worcester City said in a club statement: “Joe will be sorely missed and the club are naturally extremely grateful for the exceptional work he has carried out on behalf of the club with what is an onerous, detailed and technical role within any organisation.”

Meanwhile, the Bucks were set to have their first training session in preparation for the new National League North season last night, but it was cancelled. It is not known why training did not go ahead.
