Telford 1 Shrewsbury 0 - Report and pictures

A tidy Elliot Newby strike was enough to see AFC Telford United prevail over county rivals Shrewsbury Town.

It was a well-contested friendly at the New Bucks Head and a good night's work from the home side in particular.

With the start of the new National League North season just over a week away, there was some good passages of play from Rob Edwards' Bucks side.

Town boss Paul Hurst watched on from the stands and, although a fairly uninspiring performance, would have been pleased to see all his players come through unscathed.

Telford fielded three new trialists - Kallum Mantack, Marcus Dinanga and Regan Upton.

Mantack is a full-back under contract at Oldham Athletic, Dinanga is a striker from Burton Albion and Upton is a defender who Wolves released this summer.

The first two were included in the Bucks starting line-up, alongside former Shrewsbury players Jas Singh and John Marsden.

As they had played Cardiff City the night prior, the visitors did not put out their strongest side but first-teamers such as Bryn Morris, Lenell John-Lewis and Arthur Gnahoua started.

Set up in a 3-5-2 formation, the hosts were keen to play short, sharp football and then make use of wing-backs Mantack and Newby.

Town, in a 4-4-2, took a similar approach, but instead were looking to release forwards John-Lewis and Gnahoua in behind the Bucks' three-man defence.

There was a good pace to the first half and some feisty challenges going in, but not much to speak of in terms of clear-cut chances for either side.

Newby was the man Telford sought to create opportunities, and he caused the away side a lot of problems on the left hand side but the majority of his deliveries into the box were well blocked.

Morris was the man pulling the strings for Shrewsbury, and was on the end of a clattering from Bucks striker Matthew Barnes-Homer just shy of the half-hour mark.

The veteran got away with just a talking-to, while Mantack and the visitors' Ebou Adams put in challenges you suspect would have earned bookings if it were a league game.

The best and only major chance of the half fell to Barnes-Homer in the 44th minute, but he smashed the ball over the bar from close range after Dinanga's clever knock down.

Telford made three changes at the break and one of them was Curtis Strong, who had a big hand in Telford's opener shortly into the second period.

He nutmegged Ryan Sears before the right-back brought him down, but play was allowed on and Newby took advantage by finding the far corner with his left foot.

The Bucks made four more substitutions on the hour mark, while the first man to go off for Shrewsbury was John McAtee - in the 69th minute, with Chris Gallagher introduced in his place.

After 70 minutes of the game had passed, play slowed down considerably and, aside from a couple of long-range efforts from Gnahoua and a couple more Town substitutions, it was all pretty quiet until the final whistle was blown.
