AFC Telford United boss Rob Edwards has moved to strengthen his defensive options by signing Ryan Wilson from Matlock Town.

The 24-year-old left-back – son of former Chelsea striker Kevin Wilson – comes to the New Bucks Head from the Evo-Stik Premier outfit.

The move was revealed on social media by the Derbyshire club, who said: "Matlock Town can now confirm that defender Ryan Wilson has joined AFC Telford United.

"We would like to thank Ryan for his time at the club and wish him all the best in his future endeavours."

Wilson was a trainee at Stockport County before playing for Gateshead and Alfreton Town. Bucks made the swoop with on-loan Connor Johnson suspended for two more games.

Johnson has served one of a three-match ban and will not be available for selection until after his loan agreement from Wolves expires on October 5.

The ban is split into one match for a red card against Harrogate Town on September 9, and two for being fielded in a Checkatrade Trophy game for Wolves when he was ineligible last season. But Edwards is happy with what he has at his disposal and wants to extend Johnson’s loan.

“You want to have options and we seem to have that at the moment, and people are in good form as well, so it is really pleasing,” he said. “We kept a clean sheet on Saturday and I was delighted with the boys. Connor is missing for two more games and the players we have got are more than capable of performing, and then staying in the team and looking to keep Connor out.”

One defender Edwards has been particularly pleased with is Jordan Gough.

The left wing-back got his first Telford goal as they won 2-0 against Barwell in the FA Cup at the weekend.

“It is something we work on a lot, we want numbers in the box and the wing-backs to be at the far post when a cross comes in from the opposite side,” said Edwards. “I was pleased for Goughy to get that goal.”
