Anthony Dwyer striving to win back AFC Telford starting spot
Anthony Dwyer is confident he will thrive amid added competition for a starting spot at AFC Telford United.
The 20-year-old has not started the past four Bucks games and last scored in the 2-1 win against Boston United on October 7.
Telford have bolstered their frontline with the signing of ex-Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, but Dwyer – who previously set himself a target of 25 goals by the end of the season – is backing himself to work his way back into the starting line-up.
“It’s always good to have that competition as it keeps you on your toes,” he said. “It’s good to have it. I’m working hard to get back in.
“You have to be patient sometimes and when the chance comes, you have to take it. “I’m just looking to get back to starting games and scoring goals.”
Dwyer has played as a number nine and a right-winger for the Bucks since being signed after an impressive spell on trial in the summer.
He is their second top scorer this season with six goals, while Marcus Dinanga is leading the way with 12.
“Wherever the gaffer decides to play me, I’ll go out there and do a job, give it 100 per cent – that’s the type of player I am,” said Dwyer.
“I have settled in well here but I cannot get too comfortable, I’m out of the team at the moment.
“You always have to have that urge – to push yourself.”
Dwyer is enjoying the opportunity to learn off experienced strikers such as Ebanks-Blake and Matthew Barnes-Homer.
He endured a tricky time last season – having spells at Stafford Rangers, Matlock Town and Ilkeston – but feels he has improved under Rob Edwards.
“Sylvan is a great guy and a great person for me to learn off with all that he has done in the game,” said Dwyer.
“I welcome the competition as it brings out the best you and gets you thinking about what you can do better.
“I should have scored one or two after coming on last weekend (as Telford beat Droylsden 4-2 in the FA Trophy) but that’s gone now.”
He added: “It would be nice to be involved this weekend (at Spennymoor Town) and get a goal.
“I’m confident, but that would give my confidence a bit of a boost.”
