AFC Telford boss Rob Edwards: ‘It’s not all doom and gloom’

AFC Telford United boss Rob Edwards is in a positive mood despite having another game called off, stating: "It's not all doom and gloom."

The Bucks' scheduled home clash with Spennymoor Town on Saturday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

It was the ninth game – four at home, five away – Edwards' relegation-threatened side have had fall foul to the weather this season.

On if the postponements have been the determining factor behind being in the National League North drop zone, Edwards said: "I'm not going to make excuses, we are where we are because we haven't picked up enough points.

"The run we had in January didn't help, and you add that up with the cancellations – we went from mid-table to bottom three very quickly.

"It's not all doom and gloom, though. There are still plenty of points to play for and we can have a strong end to the season."

The New Bucks Head pitch has struggled to deal with rain and snow over the past few months.

There is a drainage issue and the club intend to renovate the surface once the season comes to a close.

Edwards was keen to point out Telford are not the only ones who have experienced pitch issues as of late – league rivals Spennymoor and Boston United have played fewer games.

"It's not just us. There are two or three worse off than us," he said.

"There's nothing we can do, the pitch was not in a good way.

"We knew on Friday, with the rain we had, the game was in doubt.

"Then with the rain overnight the referee called it off early Saturday morning, to avoid the Spennymoor fans coming down – although their players had come down on Friday.

"What can we do? It's a familiar story.

"We may have to start playing three or four games a week soon and that's just something we'll have to deal with."

Next up for the Bucks is a trip to Southport on Tuesday night.

Edwards, with Telford's game off, took the chance to watch the Sandgrounders take on Tamworth at Haig Avenue on Saturday.

The players – including new signing Dom Smith – were in for a training, led by assistant Sean Parrish and coach Gavin Cowan.
