AFC Telford chief Rob Edwards not afraid to call on Gavin Cowan

AFC Telford United boss Rob Edwards would be willing to deploy 36-year-old Gavin Cowan in defence for league games if push comes to shove.

Cowan lists Shrewsbury Town, Kidderminster Harriers and Solihull Moors as former clubs and has been at the club as a coach for the best part of two years.

He made his playing return recently as the Bucks beat Market Drayton Town 6-0 in the Shropshire FA Huddersfield Cup, starting and being taken off at half-time.

On whether he will be involved, on the pitch, as Telford aim to beat the drop in National League North, Edwards said: “We’ll see, what he does bring is a lot of experience. He is very experienced.

“He always joins in at training and looks sharp, although training is different to games of course.

“Gav was a coach on the pitch at Market Drayton, giving that direction when he needed to and that was a good exercise – trying that out.”

Older than Edwards, Cowan leads a lot of training drills and takes the warm-ups before games.

“As to whether we’ll go use him as a player going forward, that remains to be seen,” added Edwards.

“It’d be silly for me to come out and say ‘no, he won’t play again now’. At the same time, though, it’s not an immediate worry.”
