AFC Telford boss Gavin Cowan: Steph Morley is a perfect fit

The 31-year-old left-back joins the Bucks having just dropped out of National League North with Tamworth.

He has also played for Brackley Town, Corby Town and Leamington.

“I believe in balance – I was a left-footer myself and it’s always nice to have a left-footed player at left-back,” said Cowan.

“Steph is tailor made for the way I want us to play next year, in terms of his distribution, set-piece ability.

“First and foremost, Steph is a solid defender – and that’s the main thing – but he can also cause problems with his set pieces. He’s come in and I want to be able to create a situation where I’ve got my back four covered twice.”

Morley is the third new arrival of the summer, after Darryl Knights – who also spent last season with the Lambs – and Theo Streete from Brackley.

He was released by Tamworth last week, along with Knights and six others.

“He was part of what would have been a disappointing season at Tamworth, and he realises he played a part in that,” said Cowan.

“You do look at that when you have conversations, when players have been relegated, but from speaking to Steph and to Darryl who was there too, they’re very strong mentally.”

They won’t be affected by that, and they were two of Tamworth’s better players last season.

Meanwhile, Cowan has ruled out a move for Tamworth striker Akwasi Asante.

They know each other well from their time at Solihull Moors, winning the National North title in 2016 – Cowan as a player-coach.

On the 25-year-old Dutchman, the Telford chief added: “He’s not on our radar.

“There’s players on my radar, quite a few, and he is not one of them. I have not spoke to him about coming here.”
