AFC Telford's Sheridan Martinez looks to end waiting game
Sheridan Martinez is out to become AFC Telford United’s No.1 shot-stopper after waiting patiently for a chance to prove himself.
The 25-year-old has returned to the New Bucks Head following a spell last year in which he did not play a competitive minute.
He spent the second half of last term at Solihull Moors, where he again served as back-up, but is well thought of by Bucks boss Gavin Cowan and goalkeeping coach Darren Acton.
“I’m glad to be back. The gaffer has given me a chance to come back, which I really appreciate,” said Martinez.
“I worked hard last time around and didn’t get the game time, but I’m a strong believer in that good things come to those who wait.
“It’s just about proving myself, working as hard as I can to prove that I am good enough for this level.
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
Martinez was on the bench while Jas Singh was between the sticks for Telford last campaign.
He worked with Cowan and Acton at Moors too.
“I feel like I’m back at home. I’ve worked with Darren for four years now and the manager for a similar amount of time,” said Martinez.
“There’s some of the lads here from last year too.
“I feel we can do very well under the gaffer’s philosophy, the vision he has.
“Pre-season is coming up soon and I can’t wait to get started. It’s a fresh start.”
Cowan has stated his desire to bring in another goalkeeper to challenge for the shirt.
Having learnt a lot alongside Singh, who is now at Tamworth, Martinez feels he will only get better in a highly-competitive environment.
“It’s important to have competition, it stops you from getting complacent – 100 per cent,” he added.
“It’s not competition where you don’t like each other, it’s getting the best out of each other – helping each other.
“It’s always a good thing, that healthy competition. You can learn a lot.”
