The 29-year-old joined the Bucks on an 18-month deal in February and ended last season with three goals from 14 games.

He is aiming to hit the ground running under new boss Gavin Cowan and be in double figures by Christmas.

“Most definitely, it’s one of the most important seasons for me,” said Morgan-Smith, who has also played for Kidderminster, Oldham and Cheltenham.

“I’m getting to the age where I need to be kicking on now – to help the team to move forward and, at the same time, help extend my time playing.

“Some people I’ve spoke to who I’ve played with before, they say you start peaking at this age so hopefully I can take a leaf out of their book.

“It’s about looking after yourself at this time of the year, doing the right things, to make sure you start the season as well as possible.

“I can’t wait to get started. First and foremost, I’d like to get to double figures before Christmas. Then if I’m in a rich vein of form after that and can get 20, that would be fantastic.

“I’ll try to get as many goals as I can but I also want to help get other players on the scoresheet, bring others into play.”

Morgan-Smith had to make do with a place on the bench towards the end of last campaign due to the form of loan star Marcus Dinanga, who ended up as top scorer with 24 goals and has since been awarded a new contract at Burton Albion.

He expects another tough battle for a starting spot this time around following the arrival of ex-Crewe man Daniel Udoh.

It is believed Cowan is looking to sign another forward too as talks with Jordan Murphy about staying are ongoing .

“It’s only a good thing. It’s refreshing and exciting to see the club bringing in new players,” added Morgan-Smith.

“From a personal point of view, I always want competition.

“You never want to rest on your laurels, we’ll all push each other on.”
