AFC Telford v Ashton: Bucks eye more home comforts

AFC Telford United are out to make it a fantastic four as they welcome Ashton United to the New Bucks Head.

The Bucks have been thoroughly impressive so far at home, winning all three, writes Joe Edwards.

Continuing that run, though, will be a tough task. The Robins are a potential banana skin.

On the face of it, the visitors do not look that strong – the National League North newcomers have picked up seven points from their first seven games, scoring 12 and conceding 17.

They have only one win to their name as well. But, looking at those numbers in more detail, that victory was on the road – a 4-3 triumph at FC United of Manchester.

Their two other away outings have been draws at Kidderminster Harriers (3-3) and Southport (2-2).

So while their defence may be leaky, they clearly have the ability to cut teams apart.

As ever, Telford chief Gavin Cowan – while he has praised the Robins for their style, which seems a lot similar to nearby rivals Curzon Ashton who have caused the Bucks a lot of problems in recent years – will not be focusing too much on the away side.

His aim will be to make sure his men carry on in the same vein, but there are a few players the hosts should keep a close eye on.

Matty Chadwick is Ashton’s top scorer so far, having netted three times this campaign – all on their travels.

The winger, who can also play as a No.10, has been a regular source of goals for them over the past few years.

Someone Telford know all about is John McAtee.

The Shrewsbury Town youngster had a loan spell with the Bucks last season and is now with the Robins on a temporary basis.

He was used from the bench in their last game, a 2-2 draw with Darlington at Hurst Cross, and has the potential to be a match-winner.

It will be interesting to if the forward comes up against fellow Salop prospect Ryan Sears, for who it is the final match of a month-long spell with the Bucks – although it could end up being extended.

Former Wolves left-back Matt Hill, who is now 37, is on Ashton’s books too.

Cowan, who was a centre-half during his plays, faces a decision of whether to keep Dom Smith at the heart of defence, alongside skipper Shane Sutton, or bring Theo Streete back into the fold.

James McQuilkin, a scorer in the 3-1 victory against Chester last weekend, is expected to return to the starting line-up after sitting out Monday’s 2-2 draw at Leamington.

Five-goal Daniel Udoh celebrated his 22nd birthday on Thursday and will be hoping to put in another top-drawer display for the Telford faithful.

He is likely to be partnered up front by Andre Brown, who scored against the Brakes and missed a penalty later on. Having gone seven unbeaten, sitting third in the table, Bucks fans are feeling fantastic.

Cowan’s charges are giving their all for the cause and playing some very attractive football.

They really have looked the part and everyone has done their bit – there is no glaring weakness in the squad. Losses will inevitably come but, fingers crossed, not for a while.
