The Bucks climbed up to sixth in National North, three points off second-placed Kidderminster Harriers, after a dramatic late win over York City on Saturday.

It was Telford’s first win in five league outings, after a purple patch in the early weeks of the season had seen them rising high at the summit.

Cowan admitted people may laugh at the old cliche, taking each game as it comes, but the Bucks boss believes that is all his side can do at the moment.

He said: “We started the season with consistency but since then we have not been consistent.

“We can’t even think about the play-offs, we will take each game as it comes. That is an old cliche that people will laugh at but it is what we need to do.

“Top half is a realistic success for this club with the finances it has, so we can’t shout our mouths off about the play-offs.

“Anyone can beat anyone, and the consistent teams will be successful.

“We have to get that into our game and then there is a potential to finish in the top half.

“People can discuss and debate what they think we can do, and some people are saying some lovely things. But we are taking it game by game.”

The Bucks went behind against York but battled back to dominate the visiting side and grab a late victory.

Daryl Knights drew the hosts level, before Steph Morley curled in a superb last gasp free-kick to earn his side all three points.

Cowan made five changes ahead of the York clash, with goalkeeper Max Bramley dropped in place of former TNS shot-stopper Andy Wycherley.

The Telford boss added: “Max has had a good run, but we felt taking him out of the firing line would allow him to sit back and watch and take things in.

“We were not pleased with his lack of contribution to the two goals last week, but overall he has been good and I think it was a good time to take the heat off him.”
