Gavin Cowan: AFC Telford must find ruthless streak
Gavin Cowan has told his AFC Telford United players to stand up and be counted in the race for the play-offs.
Cowan watched his side fail to kill off Blyth Spartans on Saturday and then concede a last minute equaliser to the North East side.
It is the latest in a number of games the Bucks have failed to press home their dominance, and the Bucks chief wants that to change.
He said: “I would expect the lads to kill teams off.
“When you are going for the play-offs and want to be in there and you’re only winning by a single goal, it brings it home that you need to concentrate and be brilliant in both boxes.
“We switched off at the end. We have to stand up and be counted now, we said it in the changing room.
“The lads need to take responsibility if they have any ambitions of getting in the play-offs.”
On the back of the FA Trophy exit last week the Bucks have picked up four points from two games, after a superb away win at Bradford Park Avenue.
Cowan said his side needed to be more ruthless, but said he would have taken four points if he was offered them last week.
He has also praised his sides response from the FA Trophy exit.
He added: “I would have taken four points.
“Blyth was more important than Bradford because if we win a good result becomes a great result. It is a very good return though.
“I’ve been pleased with the response of the players apart from the last 25 minutes.
“We needed to be more ruthless in both boxes, but we got a good response.”
Ryan Barnett tore the Blyth full backs to pieces through the game, and Cowan praised the on loan signing but said he still has work to do.
He added: “He was good in parts but needs to be better in others.
“He is great one versus one and he is going to excel.
“He has work to do but one versus one, I wouldn’t want to be against him.”
