Gavin Cowan: Draws cost Telford play-off place

AFC Telford United boss Gavin Cowan insists they did not make the play-offs because of too many draws over the course of the season.

The Bucks just missed out on extending their campaign after falling to a 1-0 loss at York City, Jordan Burrow heading home.

Bradford Park Avenue clinched the final play-off berth with a one better goal difference. Telford ended eighth in the table with 17 wins, 14 draws and 11 losses.

“One set piece has sent us out. But coming out of the play-offs was not down to today,” said Cowan.

“The lads have showed great strength of character, but there have just been too many draws.

“It’s why I was so upset when we conceded a last-minute goal to Blyth Spartans, and when we completely dominated Altrincham but didn’t score. It’s those little one per cents.”

The Bucks never really got going at Bootham Crescent until it was too late.

“In terms of the performance, we started relatively slow,” added Cowan.

“And then it was down to one set piece.

“York dominated the first half and I felt we dominated the second, but it came down to one set piece. It’s fine margins.

“It was one of them where I felt we could have got the goal. We couldn’t have been any more attacking in the last 35 to 40 minutes.

“But these players will achieve more in the future, I’m sure.”
