Telford targets ambition may be too much
AFC Telford United boss Kevin Wilkin conceded he may be being too ambitious in his search for players to improve his squad.
The Bucks are desperate for reinforcements after an injury-hit start to the season and may be forced to name just two substitutes in tomorrow's FA Trophy clash with Hadley.
And when quizzed on whether progress had been made on the transfer front Wilkin revealed his last three targets had all earned moves higher up the footballing pyramid, potentially forcing the Bucks boss to rethink his process.
“There were a couple, and I don’t know whether I’m aiming too high with the players I’m trying to get in, that have moved to clubs over and above our level,” Wilkin said. “That could possibly be so, but I’m trying to find players that will make a difference to what we are.
“The last three that I’ve gone for have all moved to a higher level, and unfortunately that’s where we find ourselves. Two have gone in at step two and one has gone in at step one.”
He added: "I’ve had experience of taking loan players that aren’t quite what was needed at the time, and when you’re expecting to be at the sharp end of things you can’t get away with that.”
The Telford boss was keen to reassure that the reasons for losing out on targets, more often than not, was nothing to do with finances, and that it was the level of football that was holding the Bucks back from securing their top targets.
“I think on these occasions it’s been the level that we’re playing at that has been the stumbling block,” he admitted. “There have been ones that have been potentially financial, but players generally want to play at as high a level as they can, and we have to respect that.”
