Wem Town spot on after a Challenge Cup thriller

Wem Town won a thriller against Brown Clee to reach the third round of the Shropshire Saturday Challenge Cup.

The Salop Leisure League Premier Division’s bottom side took a welcome break from league action as they drew 5-5 against Division One outfit Brown Clee before getting through 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

Ethan Hanmer-Thomas (two), Tyler Delo, Ollie Hunn and John Hitchin scored for Wem in normal time.

Fellow strugglers Newport Town and Shrewsbury Juniors also needed penalties to get through as they edged out Albrighton and Ercall Evolution Aces, respectively. Constantin Ghita scored for ShrewsburyJuniors.

Zakh Ward-Penn-Harrigan hit the net four times and Callum Price once as St Martins triumphed 5-2 at Ercall Revolution, while Lewis Jones and Jamie Hands scored in the second half of Gobowen Celtic’s 2-0 victory over Haughmond.

Bridgnorth Spartans were awarded the victory at Meole Brace 1906, while the top two in Salop Leisure League Division One also advanced.

Leaders Allscott Heath Development won 3-2 at Premier Division side NC United thanks to goals from Tyrhys Hunnisett, Rio Tetsell and George Cross, while second-placed NC United Development edged out Bishop’s Castle Town 2-1 courtesy of a brace from Regan Price.

Elsewhere, Shrewsbury Up & Comers beat AMS 3-1 thanks to strikes from Shawn Melusi, Harry Harding and Andrei Radulescu, while Telford Town advanced with a 4-2 victory over Prees Club United.

Logan Mansell scored twice for Prees in defeat, while Ollie Cooper, Dan Beddows, Andy Nicol and Essa Faburay were on target for Telford.

Ben Roadnight bagged a brace in Shrewsbury Up & Comers Development’s 5-2 victory at Wrockwardine Wood Juniors Development. Jack Inglis, Liam Edwards and Christopher Marenya also scored, while, Rhys Barnfield and Liam Josephs replied. But Wrockwardine Wood Juniors’ first team did advance, however, as they beat Church Stretton Town 3-0 – Jason Harris (two) and Shane Thomas the goalscorers.

Ludlow Town Reserves also defeated Clee Hill United 4-1, while Ellesmere Rangers, Dawley Town and Morda United had all advanced during the previous midweek.

There were two games played in Salop Leisure League Division One, with Llanymynech and Ercall Rangers climbing to fourth and fifth, respectively.

Matthew Jones, Christopher Aitken, Elijah Richards and Floyd Owen helped Llanymynech see off SAHA 4-0, while Ercall won 3-0 at AFC Weston Rhyn.
