Demetriou gives Shrewsbury huge boost

Defender Mickey Demetriou is set to ease Micky Mellon's injury problems with the Shrewsbury star expected to train tomorrow.

The flying wing-back required oxygen treatment and hospital care following a nasty collision with Kayode Odejayi in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Tranmere.

But the 24-year-old has recovered well from the incident and could be in contention for this weekend's home League Two tie against Northampton.

"Demetriou should be OK which is very good news," said Mellon.

"We sent the physio (Chris Skitt) to the hospital to see him after the game. He needed a few scans but he was able to go home that night.

"He couldn't train Monday or Tuesday because you have to take precautions and it's important we looked after his health.

"But he is happy to return to training on Thursday and we are glad to have him back."

Demetriou's return is welcome boost for Mellon who also saw Liam Lawrence also pick up a knock in the Tranmere game after suffering a dead leg.

Andy Mangan is still two weeks from fitness and James Wesolowski and Nat Knight-Percival are out for the season.

"We are walking a tight-rope," said the manager, on the club's injury situation.

"We are still waiting to see if Lawrence will be available for the weekend. But we have had good news with Mangan who is now doing some straight running. We expect him to be another two weeks away but we are optimistic on that one."

Loanees Callum Burton, James Caton and Aaron Wildig have all returned to bolster the ranks at Greenhous Meadow.

Goalkeeper Burton and winger Caton enjoyed a month at Conference Premier side Southport, while Wildig spent time with Kidderminster Harriers in the same division.
