Micky Mellon: Portsmouth win was fan-tastic

Boss Micky Mellon believes Shrewsbury Town's passionate away supporters played a vital role in his team's comprehensive 2-0 win over Portsmouth.

Section's of the blue and amber army have come in for criticism in recent weeks after some fans chose to boo the team following the 1-0 defeat at Wycombe.

Goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler – who has now kept 22 clean sheets this season – also had to endure jeers from home supporters for some wayward kicking in the 2-0 win over Oxford.

Those incidents promoted the Shrewsbury Town Supporters Parliament to launch the 'sing your hearts out' campaign in a bid to get Town fans to roar their team on to glory.

And they responded in emphatic fashion on Saturday afternoon as 590 travelling Salopians made the trip to Fratton Park and went toe-to-toe with Pompey's 14,000 strong crowd.

"I was absolutely delighted for the fans that we got the victory," Mellon said.

"I could not believe how many were here and I thought they were fantastic.

"It was such a lift for both me and players to see them all when we walked out of the tunnel because they had travelled so far.

"It's support like that which makes it all worthwhile. I really hope every one of them enjoyed their journey home because we really appreciated them.

"It was terrific to see them all and you could tell their support brought the best out of the boys."

Meanwhile, the boss admitted it was pleasing to pick up Shrewsbury's first victory at Fratton Park with Town having failed to win or even draw at the ground in 10 fixtures dating back to the 1909/10 season.

"I was delighted because people couldn't wait to tell me that stat," Mellon said.

"It was a case of 'good luck at the weekend because you've never won anything there before.'"
