Town 1 Telford 1 (Town win 3-2 on pens) - Report and pictures

Shrewsbury Town prevailed over AFC Telford United in the Shropshire Senior Cup by the narrowest of margins - but both teams came out of it with something bigger to smile about.

For a largely youthful Town, it was James Wesolowski playing the full 90 minutes with a thunderbolt of a goal to boot before raising the cup as captain for the night.

And for Telford there was the pride of being slightly the better side as they showed just why they have produced a stunning revival in National League North.

In the end, Shrewsbury won 3-2 in a penalty shootout after it ended 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, Wesolowski's 25-yarder on the hour cancelling out John Cofie's stunner two minutes after the break.

Town, who started with a 3-4-1-2 formation, handed debuts to Scottish trialist Jamie Hamill at right wing back and Elliot Grandin in the hole behind strikers Scott Vernon and Ethan Jones.

And shaven-headed Hamill, who has played 163 games for Kilmarnock over twpo spells in between a 71-match spell at Hearts, was heavily involved going forwards early on.

First his inviting cross was punched away by James Montgomery, then his attempted lob was held by the Telford keeper on the line, all within seconds in the sixth minute.

Telford named virtually a full-strength line-up, with full backs Izak Reid and Kyle Brownhill, plus trialist Reece Simpson and midfielder Sean Clancy the only non starters from Saturday's 0-0 draw at Nuneaton, while centre back Graham Hutchison and midfielder Sean Clancy got much-needed game time.

If the trialists were handed chances to impress, then Grandin was the next to show his capabilities.

First his first-time 15th-minute shot from Ethan Jones's cross was blocked by Montgomery in a move he started himself, then his follow up hit Graham Hutchison.

Action immediately switched to the other end, where Mike Grogan's header was held at the second attempt on the line by Callum Burton.

And it was end to end as Ethan Jones spread play out to the galloping Hamill, whose angled drive cannoned off Montgomery's legs.

Telford continued to take the game to Shrewsbury and Hutchison's header fell straight at Burton in the 22nd minute after he nodded a corner across to Cofie, whose volley was blocked by Callum Roberts.

Four minutes later only a poor finish from Connor McCarthy prevented Telford from taking the lead after Josh Wilson headed Hutchison's free kick down to him in the box.

Telford were only inches away on 32 when Cofie hoisted a shot on the turn over Burton only for it to smack against the bar from 25 yards.

The Bucks couldn't capitalise on their superiority however and the half ended goalless after Scott Vernon scuffed his shot straight at Montgomery after Ethan Jones's effort was blocked and fell into his path.

But Telford didn't have long to wait to make their supremacy count as they took the lead within two minutes of the restart.

And it was a superb strike too as John Cofie dispossessed Jordan Clark and rifled home a stunning shot after cutting in from the left.

Telford perhaps should have made it 2-0 in the 50th minute when Josh Wilson was left clean through but Burton was off his line to smother.

Nine minutes later, Cofie's downward header was scrambled away by Burton as energetic Telford tried to extend their lead.

But seconds later, they were hit by a rocket as Town levelled in stunning fashion.

Wesolowski rifled an unstoppable drive past Montgomery into the roof of the net from 25 yards.

Vernon appeared to have a great chance to win it for Town on 71.

Ethan Jones found him in space just inside the box following a driving run but the veteran striker ended up helping the ball out of play trying to curl it into the path of his strike partner.

Chances dried up somewhat in the later stages as both sides tired after a breathless, end-to-end encounter as defences looked to get on top.

Former Shrewsbury striker Dave Hibbert, who arrived to cheers from both sets of fans in the 64th minute, saw a drive deflected into the sidenetting after Joel Bonner sliced a clearance six minutes from time.

But Telford deserved something from the tie for the way they took the game to their hosts for long periods, and created the greater number of openings.

The Bucks continued to apply pressure and in the dying seconds of normal time, a fierce, rising effort from Wilson was tipped over.

Then, in the two minutes of time added on, the lively Connor McCarthy saw a shot blocked and from the resulting corner, sub Jordan Wynter couldn't squeeze it home on the line as Burton scrambled it away.
