Dean Henderson has joined Shrewsbury Town on-loan from Manchester United.

The 20-year-old shot-stopper joins Salop having worked with Paul Hurst and Chris Doig during a previous spell at Grimsby Town.

Hurst has moved to secure the youngsters signature, following the capture of ex-Walsall goalkeeper Craig Macgillivray.

And the boss confirmed that having worked with him before that he was keen to have him in at the Meadow this season.

"We obviously had him at Grimsby and I know we were linked with him." he said.

"It's something that we'd spoke about for a long time and it took a while to finally get to this point, he's a goalkeeper that I think's got a big future in front of him and he'll be looking to take this opportunity to really kick on and progress his career.

"[He's] very young for a goalkeeper but he did very well after I'd gone and he got himself in the team.

"He kicks the ball extremely well, he's someone that is absolutely full of confidence and backs himself.

"He's probably one of the most confident characters I've met - especially at such an age.

"And maybe some people might see that as misguided at times, but I don't mind it. I think as a goalkeeper, you're out there to a degree, on your own.

"He'll come for crosses, he likes to be proactive in terms of his approach to his goalkeeping, so I'd say that might be part of the reason eventually that we all think he can go on and have an excellent career.

"Like I said I think he's got a big future and hopefully he can show that with ourselves."

The youngster is set to do battle with the likes of MacGillivray and Jayson Leutwiler for the number one spot, in what's a competitive position at Salop, but Hurst believes that competition could help all of his glovesmen.

"We'll be looking to get him involved straight away at Brackley, with him and Craig probably sharing that game." he said.

"Ultimately that's competition and that's what we've said that we want at the football club. We know certain individuals might be slightly different but I've spoken with both of those 'keepers at the end of last season and since coming in about how I see the situations unfolding.

"I haven't got a crystal ball so I can't say exactly what's going to happen, but I'm very happy with the two I have brought in, and that'll be tough for the other lads, but we'll see how things progress."

Meanwhile, Hurst is sweating over the fitness of Shaun Rowley, who is set for a scan following an injury during training.

"He [Rowley] made a save and then fell awkwardly.

"He carried on the session to be fair, and then soon as he'd finished got the ice on it, but I think over the 24 hours, testing it, seeing how it reacted there's still certainly some discomfort there and that's the reason why he's going for a scan."

"We hope it's good news for sure, he was training well and making some good saves during the training session certainly, so fingers crossed for him - hopefully it's not too long whatever it is.

"He's still a very young goalkeeper, so time's certainly on his side, but no player wants to be out for any length of time."
