The defeat made it four consecutive defeats in all competitions as exited the FA Cup in the first round for the first time since 2013.

Salford took the lead inside five minutes when Matthew Lund smuggled the ball over the line at the back post after Kelly Nmai got the better of Luca Hoole.

John Marquis pulled Shrewsbury level just 11 minutes later as he got on the end of Tommi O'Reilly's knockdown after a deep cross from Mal Benning.

And the former Bristol Rovers man fired home past Matt Young.

The teams cancelled each other out for the majority of the first half. Salford were brighter, and they were always a threat down their left side.

The ball ended up in Shrewsbury's net for a second time just before the half-hour mark as the tricky Nmai slotted past Toby Savin, but he was flagged offside.

The second did come when Salop failed to defend a set piece, and Lund diverted it towards goal - it went in off Shrews defender Josh Feeney.

Hurst's side had an immediate chance to respond to that when George Lloyd got on the end of Liam Shephard's poor header - but the striker was brilliantly denied by Young.

Lloyd did find the net after half-time, but he was offside when he slotted home as Marquis' shot was spilt by Young.

Karl Robinson's side were good value for their lead as Nmai and Haji Malcolm had efforts saved by Savin as they chased a third.

The Town boss turned to his bench as Leo Castledine and Tom Bloxham were introduced, but still, it was the hosts who looked the more likely as Kylian Kouassi saw a goal ruled out for offside.

Bloxham made a difference and he fizzed a ball across the face of goal and set up an effort for Castledine, but Town were unable to convert heading into the last 10 minutes.

Four minutes were added but Hurst's men were unable to find a way back into the game.
