Champion day for New Saints at Park Hall

The New Saints captain Paul Harrison said the club’s eighth successive JD Welsh Premier title was the most satisfying he has been involved with.

After being handed another league trophy following the 3-1 win over Caernarfon Town at Park Hall, the experienced keeper savoured the moment.

“This one is the best feeling I’ve had as we’ve had to work hard for it, and there have been quite a few pressure games,” he said.

“After having a blip in November, the lads have been brilliant and never looked back.

“They have stuck to their guns and gone on a great run.”

The champions stretched their unbeaten run to 20 games but Caernarfon were the last side to defeat the Oswestry side back in November, and threatened to dampen the celebrations as Darren Thomas’ terrific strike cancelled out Kurtis Byrne’s opener.

But two goals in the last 12 minutes courtesy of substitute Greg Draper and Byrne, with his second of the game, saw the hosts run out ultimately comfortable winners.

And the Saints will now look to finish their Welsh Premier League season in style at home to second-placed Connah’s Quay Nomads on Friday (7.45pm).

Scott Ruscoe’s side will then have their sights on landing the domestic double when they take on the Nomads again in the Welsh Cup final at Cefn Druids on Sunday, May 5.
