Wolves striker hunt continues

After Nouha Dicko departed for Hull City – leaving loanee Leo Bonatini as the club's only senior recognised striker – attention is now firmly focused on Dicko’s replacement.

It’s believed Wolves have enquired about the possibility of signing Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle, whom the Magpies are willing to sell. However, due to a number of variables including Gayle’s reportedly high wages, interest from a number of other clubs and Newcastle needing a replacement before they sell him, a deal looks unlikely.

Preston striker Jordan Hugill has been on their radar all summer and handed in a transfer request at Deepdale yesterday, which was rejected.

Wolves had moved on from Hugill but it’s understood they may re-ignite their interest if other targets don’t come off, with a number of players being considered at home and abroad.

That's if Preston are willing to sell, of course, and the Lancashire club seemed in no mood to do so yesterday, saying in a statement: "Preston North End can confirm that Jordan Hugill has handed in a written transfer request.

"The club have rejected this request and will not be selling him in this transfer window."

A host of names are being linked with Wolves including Porto forward Tiquinho Soares and Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes. Both players have been discussed but there are currently no offers on the table.

Wolves are set for a busy 48 hours with hopes high of signing three players – a striker, a midfielder and left-back.

Jordan Graham and Michal Zyro may go out on loan if suitable clubs can be found, while outcast midfielder Prince Oniangue could also move on.

It comes as Dicko became the ninth player to leave Wolves permanently this summer.

He tweeted last night: “Thanks Wolves for everything! It’s been a pleasure and a journey I won’t forget! I will always follow you! All the best for the future. To the Wolves fans thanks for the messages and the support. You’ve been brilliant with me. I will always remember.”
