Victories over Reading and Burton – combined with two defeats for their West Midlands rivals – have seen Wolves’ lead to third place almost double from seven points to 13.

Afobe admitted there were a few nerves after the 4-1 loss at Villa Park – but a talking-to from Nuno Espirito Santo got the players back on track.

“We had a meeting last Sunday as a team, the manager spoke to us and we knew what we had to do, it’s as simple as that,” Afobe said.

“It was a very honest meeting, one of the best things about this manager is he doesn’t hide things from us.

“He tells us what he feels and thinks – it’s never in a vicious or angry way – he’s a very calm guy.

“He told us what we needed to do as a team. It’s been about the shape and everything we do here is about the team.

“Football’s a funny old thing. Against Villa we were very down, the players, the fans, the staff. Everyone associated with Wolverhampton was a bit nervous, I’m not going to lie.

“We had to win the next two games which we’ve done now.

“We’re going to have a good break and go again against Middlesbrough.”

Afobe has netted four goals in his past four appearances, with three coming in the wins over the Royals and the Brewers.

He added: “When you score, your team wins and you’re top of the league, you’re in dreamland.

“The more I’ve been training with the boys, I’m adapting to the way they play and they’re adapting to the way I play.

“It was always going to be hard to come in in January. Ideally I would have wanted to hit the ground running straight away but it’s a different team to when I was here before.

“I’m enjoying my football.”
