Barry Douglas: Wolves title something to 'cherish'
Barry Douglas says Wolves will cherish their Championship promotion for the rest of their lives.
The left wing back scored as Nuno Espirito Santo’s team beat Bolton 4-0 on Saturday to clinch the second tier title.
It’s the latest success in the career of a player who has won the Polish title and the Turkish cup in his varied career.
And Douglas said: “It’s something we’re going to cherish for the rest of our lives.
“It’s been a special season, albeit it’s not done yet.
“It’s been incredible to be a part of. and achieve the way we’ve achieved.
“If you ask the supporters, it’s special in their minds.”
“Achieving promotion to the Premier League, it’s stuff that kids dream of.
“That was the ambition I had coming here, I knew we were going to give it a right go.”
It’s been a perfect campaign for Wolves and Douglas, who has provided 14 assists and scored five goals.
Was there a specific game when he knew promotion was on the cards?
“There’s been a number of games,” Douglas added. “The very first game (in pre-season) against Leicester, everything clicked.
“If we could replicate that form, we had a good chance.
“It was a difficult task for us to stick to that as the Championship is relentless and some teams don’t let you play, so it’s credit to the boys and the gaffer for sticking to that philosophy.”
“It’s nice to contribute. I set targets at the start of the season and I’m still one assist away from achieving it.
“It’s nice to be involved but ultimately it’s about the team, as a unit.
“Both incredible feelings, winning anything is an incredible feeling.
“(At Poznan), we went to the town square in front of around, close to 100,000 fans. They’re passionate over there.
“I’m sure Wolverhampton will be full as well when we get to celebrate with the fans.
“It’s something you probably won’t appreciate until you’ve finished football to then look back on it.
“This pips it a wee bit with what’s at stake, getting to the Premier League. It’s something I’m very proud of.”
“(I have a) baby due in the summer, that’ll top everything off.
“That’ll be the biggest achievement I think. It’s been a special year.”
