Wolves boss Nuno hails squad strength after Carabao Cup defeat to Leicester City
Nuno Espirito Santo hailed the strength of his squad after Wolves were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Leicester City on penalties tonight.
Nuno made nine changes to his team who drew with Manchester United on Saturday for this third round fixture at Molineux this evening.
The 44-year-old praised his squad players for stepping up to the plate and believes they took their opportunity well.
He said: “The game was the proof and evidence that we have a good squad, all the options are good.
“And the most important thing is the way the boys wait for their chance, the way they work on a daily basis knowing that maybe sometimes they are not an option, but knowing when the chances comes, good answers must be given. And today they gave a good answer.”
The game remained goalless after 90 minutes despite both teams coming close at Molineux leading to penalties.
Substitute Benny Ashley-Seal was the only Wolves player to hit the mark in the penalty shoot-out with Diogo Jota, Romain Saiss and Adama Traore having their penalties saved.
Nuno said he was ‘sad’ to exit the competition - for the second time in two years on penalties after a goalless draw - but was ‘proud’ of the performance his team gave.
He said: “It was a good game, intense, a close game, Leicester City started strong.
“I think well done with our organisation and with our shape, and afterwards I think we controlled the game.
“From then on we were the better team, created more chances, tried to avoid the penalties but most important is the way that we play the ‘how’.
“The boys did it same way (as Nuno’s normal starting Xl). Changes doesn’t mean anything for us, we keep the same style, we keep the same ideas and philosophy and game by game, it doesn’t matter what competition, we wanted to win. I’m sad that we didn’t win but proud of the way we worked.”
