Wolves skipper Conor Coady: Injuries have hit us hard
Skipper Conor Coady says injuries have ‘massively’ affected Wolves this season – but has stressed those who have stayed fit have not done well enough.
Wolves go into Monday’s Black Country derby at Albion intent on lifting supporters’ spirits after a 4-0 trouncing against Burnley last time out and a difficult campaign on the whole.
“Massively. I think it’s quite obvious that it’s affected us. When you lose a world-class striker like Raul, it’s always going to affect you,” said Coady, on how big injuries to Raul Jimenez, Pedro Neto and Jonny Castro Otto have impacted Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
“But it was up to us as players to carry that on and move us forward. And I don’t think we’ve done that as well as we would’ve liked.
“It’s been a tough season. It’s been tough for all of us.
“There have been lots of different factors, but ultimately, it’s up to us going out on the pitch every week.
“There have been performances that have been OK, performances that have been good, and then performances that have been nowhere near good enough from our point of view.
“Over the past couple of years, we’ve set ourselves expectations and everybody has seen where we’ve finished, in good positions in the table.
“Where we are now is not good enough. And that’s the biggest thing about our club – we want to improve as quickly as possible.”
As Wolves aim to avoid a second loss to the Baggies this term, Coady added: “We look at how the season has gone and we’re not happy. We want to put that right.”
