Despite not adding to his goal tally in recent games, Cunha played a big role in O’Neil’s tactical gameplans in the win over Manchester City and the draw with Villa.

He finally netted his second goal of the season in the victory at Bournemouth and although O’Neil is still working on adding more threat to Cunha’s game, he has been pleased with the progress the Brazilian is making in leading the line.

“He’s a free spirit who likes to come down and be loose with his movements and join in,” O’Neil said of Cunha’s impact.

“I try not to take too much of that away from him, but we need a number nine who can lead the line at the moment.

“We’re trying to make him understand we need him to be that guy, the focal point of the team, without taking too much away from what he is and what he can bring in different situations.
