Liam Keen comment: The value of Dan Bentley to Wolves' leadership group
A successful squad must have leaders on and off the pitch.
In the summer of 2022, the departures of Conor Coady, John Ruddy and Romain Saiss among others resulted in the heart of Wolves’ dressing room being ripped out.
A relegation-threatened season was the result and the revamped sporting department at the club, headed by sporting director Matt Hobbs, did a sterling job at adding experience, leadership and hunger back into the squad.
Among the additions that added all of the above was Dan Bentley.
The goalkeeper has only made two Premier League appearances since arriving in January and has largely been Wolves’ cup goalkeeper, behind first choice Jose Sa.
But the player – who was essentially a free transfer from Bristol City at the time – has made an enormous impact off the pitch.
His vociferous and passionate support of his team-mates, and unrelenting leadership qualities, have helped forge a tight-knit squad that Gary O’Neil is currently reaping the benefits of.
