A crucial derby win which catapulted them out of the bottom three, bruising defeats for their two closest rivals in the Premier League relegation zone and a victory-sealing goal from their star player, who in the final flourish of the evening ended any immediate speculation over his future by signing a new contract. Even the Albion lost.

One day, no matter how close to perfect it was, hasn’t solved everything. This is still a flawed Wolves team who still have plenty of hard work ahead if they are to retain their top flight status.

Yet you feel a whole lot better about their chances of doing so, than you did on Saturday morning.

Cunha stole most of the headlines after his fantastic finish, which finally killed off a depleted Villa, followed by him putting pen to paper on that new contract having made the short walk from the dressing room to his executive box in the Billy Wright Stand 90 minutes or so after the final whistle.

But while it is the Brazilian, now with 11 Premier League goals to his name this season, who can take most of the credit for Wolves even having a sniff of survival, Saturday’s win was courtesy of a true team effort to which every player on the pitch contributed.

Indeed, if there was one frustration, it was the question of where such committed, full-bloodied performances have been for much of the past six months?
