The winning team – Anthony Smith, club president Martin Fowles, club captain Martin Brisborne and Carl Beddows – pipped last year's hosts and winners Bridgnorth to the silverware by just four points.

The competition yesterday, which was overseen by the Shropshire & Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs, featured 26 teams of four with their best three scores on each hole being counted.

Hill Valley took the title with a combined score of 107, just ahead of Bridgnorth on 103. Leominster came in third, just a single point behind Bridgnorth, on 102.

Speaking afterwards Brisbourne said: "As a team we all contributed and everyone played well on the day.

"We were not outstanding but we we all contributed and it was also an advantage knowing the course and the run of the green.

"We were conscious of this before the competition started but I don't think we realised what an advantage it was.

"We didn't think we had a winning score when we came in but we are very honoured and privileged to win the competition, especially in the SHUGC's centenary year.

"We are pleased that we did not let the club down on the day."

There were also individual prizes handed out with Darren Roberts of Mile End Golf Club taking the gong in the 'nearest the pin in two' competition.

Neil Crockett of Burghill Valley and Ross Moore of Kington Golf Club's respectively claimed prizes in separate longest drive competitions.

Shropshire Star director Peter Guy said: "I am delighted that the Shropshire Star has been supporting the county team trophy for more than 30 years."

He also thanked Hill Valley's club president for his organisation and assistance in putting on the event.
