Wrekin Golf Club's Trey Niven has enjoyed a flying start to his under-18 county career with a hole-in-one.

Niven, 15, made his bow for Shropshire & Herefordshire in their Midland League clash with Derbyshire at Erewash Valley at the weekend.

The magic moment came on the 166-yard par three 14th and Niven followed it up by winning his singles match 3 & 2.

It was not enough to prevent a defeat for the visitors, who lost 10-5, but he said it was a great way for him to mark his call-up.

"The hole-in-one is probably one of my proudest moments so far because not a lot of people get one even if they have been playing for a long time," he said.

"The captain Chris Makin also mentioned it in his speech at the end of the match so it was a proud moment."

Niven, who attends Idsall School, added that he is now keen to make more appearances for the team in forthcoming games.

Shropshire & Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs' junior golf chief Charles Sievewright was also delighted with Niven's contribution.

And despite the team's defeat he said: "The team had six under-16s players including Joe Blunden who is an under-14, and there were some very encouraging performances.

"Joe Blunden and Cameron Dhir, Trey who had a hole in one at 14th, and Adam Reade all contributed to singles points.

Shropshire, who remain winless in the Midland League, have one further under-18's match to play against Warwickshire at Burghill Valley in which to break their duck.
