The 1985 Open Champion made two birdies to top the leaderboard early on during the morning.

And he finished with a level par round of 70, including three birdies.

Fellow Shropshire legend Ian Woosnam, from Oswestry, is tied 94th following a six over par 76.

America's Gene Sauers leads the way on three under.

Meanwhile, Wrekin Golf Club's Will Enefer was today hoping to break into the top 20 on the fourth and final day of the English Boys Under-18 Amateur Strokeplay Championships.

Enefer finished day three in tied 24th place after producing his best round of the competition.

The teenager managed three birdies in a one under par 71 at West Lancashire Golf Club after two rounds of 76. Italy's Lorenzo Scalise currently tops the leaderboard.
