Bridgnorth's Callum Brown is waiting with baited breath to take up his office after he was announced as the new Shropshire & Herefordshire united counties junior captain for 2014.

Brown, who plays off a two handicap, will take over from Nick Jones, of Lilleshall Hall, who is coming to the end of his term of office and must relinquish his post.

S & H head of junior golf Charles Sievewright took the decision to appoint Brown, who is rated as one of the most talented young golfers the county has to offer.

Fellow two-handicapper Harry Burt and Will Enefer, who plays off scratch, are the leading teenage stars for Wrekin and the county but Sievewright believes Brown runs them a close third.

Sievewright said: "Callum has been chosen because he's one of the lower handicap lads in his age group and it's his last year as a junior, which is what I normally go for.

"He's a good public speaker, too, and you want a junior captain to have a bit of personality. There are speeches to give along the way.

"He's a very competent golfer, as well, so he's ideal for the job. Apart from Harry and Will, who are so well known, Callum's the lowest handicap to them."

Jones still has months left of his course to run but his competitive term as team leader is over, with just a few friendly fixtures to play.

He has moved away from the area, too, to go and study at university and Sievewright has hailed the outgoing captain's term as skipper.

He said: "Nick has gone to study at Buxton, a course which has a bias on golf, he's had a good year as captain and he's been first-class in the role.

"He's another one with a good personality."

Both Brown and Jones will be competing alongside their a junior organisers in a team event club competition at Shifnal today.

It's a tournament where the club's organiser of the junior section combines teams with the young skipper to take on opposing sides.
